NEW YORK, July 13 – Last month, Global Coalition on Migration members joined Member State representatives and civil society allies in finalizing the eighteen-month process to develop the text for the Global Compact on Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration, which began with the New York Declaration for Refugees and Migrants.
GCM played a key role in coordinating civil society throughout the civil society consultation phase of the Compact, as well as during intergovernmental negotiations.
A cautiously hopeful atmosphere reigned as UN officials and Permanent Representatives took the floor for their final interventions which reflected disagreements on key issues in the compact.
Civil society was also given the opportunity to speak to the Member States during the momentous occasion, as two young activists, Alexis Bautista from Migrant Forum Asia (GCM member) and Lama Ranjou from the United Nations Major Group for Children and Youth (UNMGCY), read out loud the Joint Civil Society Statement released earlier that morning. Watch the video of Bautista and Ranjou’s speech below.
